This morning

This morning I was reminded of a simple truth: if you can meditate when life is upside down, when the pressure is heavy, when things don’t look good, then you are well trained.

I know this truth because I have lived it.

Years of yoga. 60,000 miles of running. Nights sleeping in the park. Waking every day before dawn to train my mind and body. My meditation was forged not in the easy times, but in the fire of suffering turned into joy.

I have seen the difference between talking about practice and living the practice. Many people pretend. They hide their overeating, their smoking, their habits. They speak as if they are perfect. But the body doesn’t lie. The posture doesn’t lie. The energy doesn’t lie.

Control is its own addiction. To control others, you must keep lying, pretending, maintaining the act. But when you live with discipline, there is no need to control anyone. You simply live it. Discipline speaks for itself.

The truth is simple: anyone can talk about the practice. Few can be the practice.
